The monthly meeting for Krewe de Tech in July is cancelled due to the fact that the library will be closing at 1PM Tuesday for the July 4th holiday. We are also not the only group displaced by this action; there were other events scheduled in the late afternoon/evening hours as well.

March 2018 - New Orleans Mini Maker Faire

The New Orleans Mini Maker Faire will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 10am-4pm on the grounds in front of Delgado Community College’s Student Life Center!   Alex Owens, Innovation Teacher at Bricolage Academy of New Orleans, will tell us all about what will be going on that day.  And he'll let us know how we can participate as a maker, volunteer, or sponsor.

The New Orleans Mini Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From local artists to engineers to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue for these "makers" to show hobbies, experiments, projects. Our goal is to entertain, inform, connect and ultimately grow this community of diverse makers here in New Orleans. Last year, we had nearly 100 makers from across the city, from NASA's Stennis Space Center to the Makers of NO to the robotics team at Warren Easton High School. This year, we are excited to recruit more makers and hope you’ll join us in making the NOMMF the best yet for attendees from all across New Orleans. We’re looking for inventors, tinkerers, hobbyists of all shapes and sizes who may be interested in having booths that both show off maker projects and/or engage the community around a specific skill. Hosting a booth is free and we expect over 4,000 folks from across New Orleans to attend this year.

New Orleans Mini Maker Faire is presented by Bricolage Academy of New Orleans, an open enrollment New Orleans charter school. The faire is also an extension of the school's mission to create innovators. At Bricolage, I teach the "Innovator's Workshop", a cross section between art, STEM, digital media, and recess. Depending on the age and students of the class, we learn how to make everything from simple circuit flashlights to stop motion animation to cardboard robots. Similar to the spirit of our Maker Faire, the emphasis of our work is not the final product, but instead the process- the creative confidence needed to start, the willingness to fail to reiterate, and the critical thinking skills needed to solve each problem that comes up. Only in our fifth year of growth, the staff at Bricolage is excited to continue to grow this early program and connect with makers and designers across the city to learn from their experience and skill sets.

Christopher Hatten from Mildred Osborne will be joining Alex. The IDIYA CoLab MakerSpace at Mildred Osborne Charter School has been utilized by 337 students from Kindergarten through 8th grade this year alone. The space is also utilized for summer maker camps and even serves as community makerspace for those working on smaller projects. The students at Osborne explore physics, basic engineering, simple circuits, 3D modeling and printing, vectoring and laser cutting, CNC milling, sewing, and much more.
